D-Day Flag Added to Smithsonian's Collection
In a ceremony at the White House on July 18, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III accepted a 48-star flag flown on the control vessel Landing Craft, Control 60 (LCC 60) that bore witness to the D-Day landings. The flag is now on view as part of the National Museum of American History exhibit D-Day, June 6, 1944 – a display of select objects from the museum’s World War II collection to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Go for the Moon
As part of the National Air and Space Museum's Apollo 11 anniversary celebrations, a 363-foot Saturn V rocket was projected on the Washington Monument. The projection was accompanied by "Apollo 50: Go for the Moon," a 17-minute projection show combining full-motion projection mapping artwork and archival footage to recreate the launch of Apollo 11 and tell the story of the first Moon landing.

"I Am...," a new exhibition at the National Museum of African Art, takes its title from Helen Reddy's 1971 pop music hit "I Am Woman." The exhibition is part of the museum's Women's Initiative Fund – an effort to increase the visibility of female artists in its shows, publications, partnerships and in its collections. Featuring works by 27 of Africa’s leading modern and contemporary female artists, this exhibition highlights the vital contributions of women to numerous issues, including the environment, identity, politics, race, sexuality, social activism, faith and more. The Invisible Flood
"Saltwater intrusion," when the sea level rises and pushes large amounts of saltwater onto the coast, is one of the most prominent – and least talked about – effects of climate change. This causes problems for plants and animals that aren’t used to living in salty environments, and can help invasive species thrive. There are ways to stem the tide – but time isn't on our side.

The Smithsonian and Skateboarding?
"Innoskate" is the intersection of the Smithsonian and skateboarding. Grounded in the belief that invention and innovation happen every day – often in unexpected places – Innoskate celebrates invention and creativity in skate culture and shares that history with diverse public audiences. The latest Innoskate was recently held in London and explored art, design and innovation found at the core of the sport.
